Yoga Development

Fay found herself naturally drawn to yoga from childhood and it is through its practice she began to find a true sense of her self. Enabled to accept and make peace with her Indian heritage, integrating it with her European ancestry. Making space for both aspects to harmoniously coexist within, as to deny any element, simply denies wholeness and health.

The clarity of Iyengar yoga, with its detailed instructions and focus on true holistic alignment, captured Fay’s attention. Practising with every level of self; physically, in terms of muscles and bones, physiologically with awareness of the systems and organs within the body, mentally and emotionally enabling a spiritual connection from within, Fay began to embrace the practice more deeply.

In her twenties through the mentorship of a dear friend, who considered Fay to be the daughter and sister she’d never had, Fay began introducing Ayurvedic principles into her daily life. On a trip to buy a book on the ancient art of Indian massage by Harish Johari at an Indian bookstore, Fay came across the work of Geeta Iyengar, daughter of BKS Iyengar. In the writings of Geeta Iyengar Fay found a gentleness; with its thorough focus on all aspects of women and their lives.  This enabled a deeper  appreciation of the art and science of this beautiful practice and it’s application and meaning within her life.

Fay recorded the instructions from the text on to cassette tapes as guidance for her practice. Reviewing and refining these, as well as studying the guidance and teachings of her guru, Geeta Iyengar.

Fay’s role within her family meant she was encouraged to spend most of her time within the home, so studying the practice this way, gave her access to the practice and teachings in a way that worked for her. Looking back Fay appreciates the discipline this instilled, and the foundation this laid, for focusing within and learning to be fully present with self, the true aim of yoga, merging or uniting; union of the soul with universal truth. An understanding of the soul that cannot be fully comprehended by the mind alone.

Whilst yoga has remained a constant ‘gem’ within her life, ( “Yoga- A Gem For Women” Geeta Iyengar ) over the years her practice has at times, waxed and waned. However, on returning with more fullness once again to her practice, Fay finds renewed inspiration unfailingly as she returns to the text and teachings of her guru Geeta. Each time life’s challenges have meant her practice has not been what she ideally wishes, Fay finds her love is rekindled anew through the words of the texts, and her practice is somehow enriched, as she integrates her learning of life’s lessons.
